After a brief hiatus in 2020, South Australia's Umbrella Festival is back for its fifth instalment this July and August.
The annual winter festival will deliver a live music program of more than 170 events and 294 performances across 85 venues from Friday 16 July until Sunday 8 August.
Artists featured in this year's program include the likes of legendary Gunditjmara and Bundjalung musician Archie Roach, indie-pop sweethearts MUM FRIENDS, afro-beat heroes The Shaolin Afronauts, Larrakia and Tulampunga Pakana artists MARLON X RULLA, plus a long list of other local acts.
Colliding with the inaugural Illuminate Festival, organisers have joined forces with Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute to produce KINARA - a one-night-only activation along Karrawirra Parri (River Torrens) celebrating the full moon on Saturday 24 July. The all-ages and free event will combine live music with immersive sound, light and imaginative experiences created by Pintupi artists.
Not-for-profit DIY contemporary music festival Half Strange is also back for its fifth instalment, highlighting female and non-binary performers across three venues.
Additional curated events within the City of Adelaide include Art Attack; a paint and sip style party featuring funk-rock outfit George Glass, Frequency Response (in partnership with Deaf Can:Do) an immersive and multi-sensory audiovisual experience designed for Deaf or hard of hearing and enjoyed by all at The Lab, the return of the 2019 umbrella installation in Vaughan Place in the city's west-end, featuring Kiah Gossner's CONTACT which combines audio, visual and structural elements to explore a culture of domestic violence, and finally Woolly Mammoth, Uncle Mum's frosty winter festival, highlighting the best and warmest of local and interstate talent.
