Learn to graft fruit trees to create a new tree with the best features of both

A step by step guide to grafting fruit trees - it's a bit of fun and a great way to learn more about plants, fruit trees and genetics.

Donal, the facilitator, from NZ Treecrops Association - Otago, is after some graft wood from a Doyenne de Comice pear tree. If you can assist please contact Donal directly via email donalferg@gmail.com.

Grafting is the practice of joining the roots of one tree, the “rootstock”, with a branch from another, the “scion”.

By bringing parts of two trees together, you can create a new tree with the best features of both trees. The rootstock determines how tall the tree grows, how it branches, what soil and climate it will grow in, whereas the scion decides what type of fruit the tree will produce. Grafting also takes away some of the genetic uncertainty that comes when growing trees from seed.

After an introduction from Donal Ferguson (NZ Tree Crops Association), participants will practise with sticks from willow and will then graft selected apple or pear rootstocks to scions of their choice.

So now is the time to prepare by cutting your graftwood. Choose last year's growth, wrap it in moist paper or cloth. Label it, store it in the fridge (not in the freezer)!

We will be doing apple and pear grafts. If you want to graft more than one tree please indicate when booking your ticket by answering the questions to indicate how many trees you would like to purchase.

The cost of $35 includes the cost of your first tree (rootstock) and graft (scion). Additional trees will cost $18 each. If you wish to bring your own graftwood, we can supply limited rootstock at a discounted rate.

To get up to speed and have a basic understanding of what we will be doing, you are welcome to check out this video prior to the workshop.

Meet in the small courtyard beside Silverstream School reception on Green Street, Mosgiel. Bring a warm jacket and sturdy footwear. A cuppa and snack will be provided.
