This centenary year of Charles Mingus’ birth deserves to be a landmark celebrated everywhere creative music thrives. A composing genius and double bass virtuoso, the LA-raised original disrupted jazz insularity with a repertoire that ran from New Orleans street-struts, to hard-swinging blues and bebop, jazz/classical splicings from Stravinsky, Bartók and Duke Ellington.

The jazz icon's 100th birthday is celebrated with three of the best and most exciting award winning young jazz musicians in Aotearoa. Jack Harris (sax), Louis Holland (trombone) and Theo Thompson (guitar). Along side them a rhythm section of international repute, John Rae (drums), Ben Wilcock (piano) and Patrick Bleakley (bass). The ensemble will be performing some of Mingus’ best and most loved compositions in a concert to excite jazz lovers everywhere.
